EDC, EDT, EDP, and perfume oil – what's the difference?

Perfume Types – from Light and Fresh to Rich and Long-lasting

Perfumes are often categorized by the concentration of fragrance oil they contain. This affects both intensity and how long the scent lingers on the skin. While there are no international laws dictating exact limits, the industry operates according to established guidelines that make it easier to understand the differences between types.

Curiosa only works with EDP and perfume oil because they provide the richest and most long-lasting fragrance experience. Here’s a clear overview of all categories.

EDC – Light and Refreshing

Eau de Cologne (EDC) has a low concentration of fragrance oil, typically between 2–5%. This makes it light, fresh, and perfect for a quick refresh during the day. Its longevity is short, and the scent often lasts 1–2 hours.

EDT – Fresh and Versatile

Eau de Toilette (EDT) has a slightly higher concentration of fragrance oil, at 5–12%, and a more pronounced presence of top notes. It is light to medium in intensity and appreciated for its fresh character. The scent often lasts 2–4 hours.

EDP – Rich and Long-lasting

Eau de Parfum (EDP) has a higher concentration of fragrance oil, typically 15–20% according to industry guidelines. This gives the fragrance more depth, clearer heart notes, and longer longevity.

As Curiosa works with richer and more complex compositions, our EDPs are at the higher end of the scale, around 30% fragrance oil in the final formula. This provides a richer and more long-lasting experience without needing to categorize ourselves as "parfum."

Perfume Oil – Intense and Close to the Skin

Perfume oil is the most concentrated form, pure perfume oil without alcohol. It is soft, personal, and develops close to the skin. The oil typically ranges from 20–40% in strength and lasts for many hours, sometimes longer. Perfect for layering or as a unique signature scent.
